E-commerce in Bangladesh is booming. In the past few years, online shopping sites have exploded onto the scene and is experiencing exponential growth every year. In 2017, the size of the e-commerce market was Tk. 17 billion from Tk. 4 billion in 2016. The market is projected to grow to Tk. 70 billion by 2021

Here are some tips on how to make e-commerce work for you:

1. Check for prices at different locations as well as prices online

While you may be used to shopping in retail stores, online shopping is offering very attractive discounts and is an option you should consider to make savings on your shopping. Even if you are shopping in store, for big ticket purchases, do try to compare prices at some of the big stores. Some of the leading online websites in Bangladesh are websites like:

  • Daraz for a wide selection of electronics, fashion and home appliances,
  • AjkerDeal.com for necessary daily products and they also have regular offers,
  • Pickaboo for the best deals on gadgets and electronics,
  • Bagdoom for lifestyle products,
  • Othoba, which is a sister concern of Pran- RFL group and they stock  groceries, medical kits, accessories and much more,
  • Priyoshop is trusted for shopping for clothing online, and
  • ClickBD which is a P2P selling website.

When you are shopping online, the same product maybe offered by different sellers on the same website at different prices, and prices on different websites maybe different so make sure to have done an extensive search within and across websites. You can use price comparison websites like AmarPrice or BDCost to look for the best price across different websites.

For online shopping, one tip to try sometimes is to add to cart and not shop the same day as prices may fluctuate. Downloading mobile apps of online stores is also a good idea as they often offer higher discounts on the app.

2. Check for Discounts, Coupons and Offers

If you decide to shop online, check for discounts with coupons and cashbacks on websites like DeshiCoupon which regularly update coupons and offers for websites.

For retail stores, look for their coupons when you shop there next, and check out websites like GoromGorom who are constantly updating coupons, offers and discounts across different stores and locations.

3. Signup for newsletters of websites to get discounts

Signing up for newsletter is useful as sometimes for new users, websites will send a coupon code to avail deals or discounts.

Websites also often send end of season discounts and offer special discounts during festivals like Eid, Pohela Boishak and special days like new year’s day or local variants of Black Friday (like the Daraz has FataFati Friday deals).

4. Signup for loyalty programmes for your regular shopping locations

Be sure to sign-up for your favorite retailers’ loyalty programs and get their loyalty card as you can keep accumulating loyalty points for shopping with them and redeem it for discounts or attractive gifts. All big retail stores like Aarong have their own loyalty programmes. If you are a frequent flyer, make sure to sign up for airline loyalty programs too on your most used airline.

5. Select the right payment option for online shopping

Use payment options like debit and credit cards as most bank cards have discounts with different merchants. City Alo Debit Card users can avail discounts at a number of stores within Bangladesh. If you don’t have a credit card then use the BankCompareBD website to see which credit card would be the best for you. Also, regularly check and maximize your reward points when you use credit cards.

Other emoney options like bKash also give cashback discounts when you use that as a payment option.

6. Buy second hand - good for the environment and pocket-friendly

There are multiple Facebook groups like Buy Sell Bangladesh where you can buy many things second hand that are great quality or even Facebook’s own marketplace section where people post products to sell.

You can use websites like Bikroy.com which is a very popular website in Bangladesh to buy anything from used electronics, mobiles, vehicles, fashion and much more and you can search by location.
